Marr, a light skinned Black femme stands in all black with pink platforms. They have box braids and big gold jewelry. They are looking down at their blue nose pitbull smiling down at her.

hi, i’m marr hassan, LAC!

i’m a Black, non-binary (they/them), femme, licensed associate counselor based in southern Arizona.

i came into being a therapist because when I opened up psychology today to find my own therapist years ago, i was hard pressed to find someone that looked like me or shared my values. and that was in new york city, one of the most “diverse” cities in the world.

my community has always consisted of: leftists, punks, sex workers, kinksters, queers, trans people, and self-described freaks/weirdos. all people that have historically been over-pathologized by the medical industrial complex, and many of whom are rightfully fearful of social workers, counselors, doctors, and police. these systems weren’t built for people like us! so, with the help of some really rad mentors I’ve been working to navigate this system to provide judgement-free, egalitarian, anti-oppressive counseling services for my larger community.

my practice is rooted in abolition and social justice within an anti-oppressive framework. I use a basis of liberation psychology, mindfulness, somatics , and feminist counseling theory to empower and guide clients towards fulfilling their counseling goals. My practice is trauma informed and non-judgmental.

modern therapy totes the idea that you can share whatever without fear in session, but for many of us we have had experiences that have proven otherwise. in my office, you can feel safe knowing your autonomy will never be taken away from you.
